KAWS Companion Float x Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade

Here are signs that the “mainstream” is trying to get hesitant hipsters into liking normal people stuff like parades and Thanksgiving. KAWS will be using the patented Companion character with hands covering the eyes to wow little kids and 27 year olds in super tight pants alike. Keep an eye out for it on Thanksgiving. I’ll just keep an eye out on thousands of Instagram photos that will likely appear.

On a side note about me because that’s what I like to talk about, the last month of this semester of graduate school was a total bitch! Ch. 1-3 of the thesis, Immunology, and Grad Internship does really take up a lot of time. Which leads me think that anybody that says they like school is full of shit. Nobody likes school, but the difference between people that get their PhDs and ones that only get their Bachelors is how much shit they are willing to put up with. I can put up with a lot of shit apparently.

You know, Mr. Cartoon looks like my friend’s dad. The difference though, is that Mr. Cartoon has creative talent and doesn’t suffer from diabetes… On another note, I thought Sam Anderson (Bernard from Lost) was there and I was about to nerd out. On closer observation, it was not Sam Anderson and it furthered my belief that all old white men look alike.

Winner of Heineken Limited Edition Design Challenge Announced

Today Heineken is pleased to announce the winner of the Limited Edition bottle design challenge. Rodolfo Kusulas of Monterrey, Mexico and Lee Dunford of Sydney, Australia designed each half of the winning bottle, which looks like this:

The challenge saw more than 30,000 entries with creative types connecting their designs on Facebook from over 100 countrie. The winner was selected from 3 pairs of finalist designs by the judges Evan Orensten – Co-founder and Executive Editor of Cool Hunting, Mark Dytham – Co-founder of global creative network, PechaKucha and Mark van Iterson – Global Head of Design, Heineken.

Yoskay Yamamoto “Jokes On Me…”

Yoskay Yamamoto’s exhibition “Jokes On Me…” was on display last weekend at the LeBasse Projects Chinatown in L.A. His work is based on childhood characters that we grew up with but with a little twist. And the twist is, if you were on acid.

Little Paper Planes

Check out this pretty cool little book where you detach perforated pages and you fold them into paper planes. Just like when you were younger but the difference is your plane and design was shitty, while this one is totally cool, hipster-certified cool. Each plane was designed by various artists accompanied by instructions and supplies on how to build the paper plane. Kelly Lynn Jones created “Little Paper Planes” book and it can bought at Amazon.com.

Heineken Limited Edition Design Challenge – Judging Video

International judging panel gather in New York to select three finalist designs to go through to next stage of Limited Edition Design Challenge.

My favorite has to be the first one with all those color strings. It seems so simple but it is really brilliantly designed. It contrasts so well with the clean Heineken star.

To mark its forthcoming 140th anniversary Heineken® has been challenging creative talent from around the world to connect through social media and design its next Limited Edition bottle. Budding designers paired up to design each side of the bottle via Facebook, and find another bottle half to ‘connect’ with. Now the entries are in, and the top 100 designs that show how people will connect in the future have been pulled out for display on the beer’s Facebook page. This long list will be judged by an international panel from the world of design and culture. The winning partnership will see their design launched in an exclusive 140th anniversary Limited Edition gift pack going on sale globally from December 2012.

The winning design will be revealed at the end of March after a multi-skype presentation where finalists showcase their designs to the judging panel. John Slattery on GQ’s “Style Bible”

Sterling (John Slattery) from Mad Men is one of three on the cover of GQ’s Style Bible. I always marvel at the suits in GQ. People still don’t believe that to make a suit look good, its to tailor it to the body. Nothing is uglier than a baggy suit and unfortunately, when I see business networking week at CSUF, the landscape is filled with poorly dress men. I saw a guy wearing a oversize suit, shirt untucked, and a pair of Supras on his feet. Horrible, just horrible.

Gravis Footwear Instagram Photo Contest

Well, it didn’t take long for Instagram to be the next big thing in social/hipster media. I have a Instagram too but it is not very active because I refuse to take self-indulgent photos.

Southern California based alternative footwear and accessory brand Gravis has launched the Gravis Instagram Photo Contest beginning March 1st and running throughout 2012.

Gravis Footwear will encourage their audience to follow @gravisfootwear on popular photo-sharing platform, Instagram. Users are then able to upload photos, tag them with #gravisphotocontest and become entered to win a free pair of Gravis shoes.

My drill sergeant ridiculed me for my feet, and I held my tongue because NCO’s are sticklers for soldiers talking back. New Balance debuts their Excellent Makers global campaign today that celebrates people in the world who “make” things – especially things that are “Excellent.” The brand highlights craftsmen, athletes, artists and musicians and shares their common passion for what they do.

Heineken Open Design Explorations Edition 1: The Club

Heineken has been working for the past year with emerging designers on a progressive pop-up nightclub which responds to the needs of clubbers. It will be unveiled at the Milan Design Week in April.

The Heineken project is called Heineken Open Design Explorations Edition 1: The Club. It has been designed by 19 up-and-coming designers – chosen from Milan, New York, Sao Paulo and Tokyo, by world class design experts – and is an exciting opportunity to showcase their visionary take on club design on a world stage. Coming from a range of different disciplines – from interiors to fashion – the club is the conclusion of almost a year of discovery between the emerging designers, Heineken and clubbers’ input; all to create an exclusive environment that can now be experienced by members of the public.

The club is a great demonstration of how the world of interiors, graphics, fashion, products and motion design have combined to create a club that responds to clubbers needs. The project has led to some unique collaborative designs between the designers involved, and seen them act on the insight offered by the clubbers to create some distinctive work.

Beavis and Butt-Head x JackThreads collabo

The limited edition collection sale ends today at JackThreads! I know, I know, I’m late, but let’s be honest here. How many bloggers you know is actually working on a graduate degree rather than “grinding”? Exactly…

MTV approached JackThreads to help celebrate the release of Beavis and Butt-Head’s new season on DVD & Blu-Ray. The JackThreads design team, led by Adam Gianotti, went to work to create a collection of designs with a unique street culture twist. Items in the capsule include Butt-Head sporting Inked culture tattooed knuckles, a Tom Anderson themed graphic inspired by the Thrasher Magazine logo and a series of flips on the underground “Listen To” t-shirt meme. Each and every design had been approved by Beavis and Butt-Head iconic creator, Mike Judge.

PF Flyers x J.Crew

One of my favorite brands, J.Crew has teamed up with PF Flyers…. yes the same PF Flyers that Sir Charles mocked two years ago at the All-Star Slam dunk contest, has came up with a collaboration that is classic and more importantly, easy on the wallets. The pair of shoes will run you about $65. These are the type of shoes do look good if you decide to be more casual but maintain the business look such as a sweater, tie, and Chino’s. I think I just described the attire of super hipster company powerhouse, Instagram.

This is a pretty interesting way to treat your denim jeans. If you got some spare skateboard wheels hanging around, you can bring it in to one of their designated bins, you can get a WW shirt and card.

What’s New with Wheel Wash?
After introducing the process of machine-washing apparel with used skate wheels (as opposed to traditional stones) in previous denim collections, Analog has now extended this technique across their entire SS12 line. The collection will include Wheel Washed pants, boardshorts, button downs, tees, and fleece.
Revolutionary to fabric treatment, the difference in utilizing wheels can be felt in the clothing. While heavily abrasive stones typically break down material, wheels act as a softener, adding a very smooth and conditioned feel to the garment.
“We’re really excited to wash a wider range of styles with skate wheels after the denim line’s success,” says Joey Jorgensen, Analog Design Director, “it’s such an innovative process, and quite literally keeps skateboarding at the heart of production.”

These shoes would look good with a pair of Chino’s. I was never a fan of these type of shoes with jeans or shorts but if it works for you, so be it.

Ouattara Watts featured in Cool Hunting

Brooklyn artist Ouattara Watts was featured in Cool Hunting this week in the midst of his new exhibition. There is a few things I appreciate in this world and that’s creative art. I’m a person that enjoy the creative process over the results any day of the week. It is very, very difficult to come up with your own work, and this is not just in the art world but everything else from our job, our research, and our passion. If you sit down and really think about the work you do, then it is tough to be modest about your efforts. I talk about my research all the time, and I always try to be modest about it even though people praise it for its creativity and contribution. Being modest I feel, keeps me process oriented rather than results. I leave the perception of my results to the audience.

The exhibition opens Feb. 7 to Feb 19 on 560 Washington St.
